PMRGCAuk Week is our week to raise awareness of the conditions of PMR and GCA and raise funds to support the work we do. This year it runs from 23rd to 29th June.
We are pleased to be running three webinars (on Zoom) that are open to everyone with PMR or GCA, and their carers and family who might want to find out more. Please note that the first webinar is taking place before PMRGCAuk Week!
Webinar 1: Dr Mark Hughes, Consultant Rheumatologist at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust
Exercise with PMR/GCA and the webinar launch for Marathon in a Month 2025
Thursday 12th June 11am BST
Dr Hughes will talk about what happens to your muscles when you are on steroids for PMR/GCA and how exercise can help. He will also talk about his own personal challenge of running over 100 miles to raise money for us. This webinar also sees the launch of our Marathon in a Month campaign and so will be helpful for anyone wanting to join in with walking through July.
Webinar 2: Professor Toby Helliwell, Professor of General Practice and Primary Care Lead in Global Health, Honorary Professor of General Practice Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust
The Challenges of Diagnosing and Managing PMR in Primary Care
Tuesday 24th June 11am BST
A GP by background, Prof. Helliwell has focused his research career on PMR and GCA in general practice. As this is where people with PMR and GCA are first seen and often managed, he feels it is essential that the research can contribute to better and earlier diagnosis by GPs and to support people with PMR and GCA through the course of their illness.
Webinar 3: The Professor Susan Mollan, Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham and a Consultant Neuro-Opthalmologist
Sight loss with GCA – Why does it happen? Who’s most at risk? What should you know?
Wednesday 25th June 11am BST
Prof. Mollan will describe sight loss in GCA. She will discuss why it happens and who are the people who may be at higher risk. Importantly she will discuss sight changes that you may experience from treatment for GCA. She will provide helpful advice on what to do should you be concerned about your sight.
