Fiona is a recently retired social worker with significant experience of management within social
care. Fiona was a senior manager in Brighton & Hove and East Sussex between 1994 and 2010
contributing to the development of strategy and operational services with a focus on safeguarding.
From 2010 Fiona ran her own business undertaking Serious Case Reviews, Safeguarding Adult
Reviews and Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews for Boards and Partnerships throughout England.
In 2018 Fiona completed an MA in Social Work Research and Evaluation at the University of Sussex
where the research interest was the effectiveness of the serious case review process. Fiona was
hoping to complete a Doctorate on the same subject but was forced to withdraw in 2018 because of
her ill health from Giant Cell Arteritis. Since retiring in 2023, Fiona became a volunteer on, and is
now the Co-ordinator of, the PMRGCAuk telephone helpline. She also assists in the co-ordination of
the Brighton Support Group. In the last month Fiona has been nominated by PMRGCAuk to act as a
Patient expert on the NICE Committee that is appraising a new potential medication for GCA called
Upadacitinib. Fiona is also an ‘Expert by Experience’ members of the new Guideline Working Group
for the update to the GCA clinical guideline.
