Dorothy is the president of Murray Edwards College, Cambridge. She was most recently Editor-at-Large at Channel Four Television, having been the Head of News and Current Affairs at Channel Four for many years. Prior to that, she was the Commissioning Editor of Dispatches, the Editor of ITV’s The Big Story and a producer/director on World in Action. She has also made network history and arts programmes.
She was made a Fellow of The Royal Television Society for her Outstanding Contribution to Television and won the RTS Journalism award for Outstanding Contribution to Television Journalism. She has won various other personal awards including the Grierson Trustees Award for contribution to documentary, the Women in Film and Television Award for contribution to the medium, and a Scottish BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting. Programmes she has overseen have won many Emmy, Bafta and Royal Television Society Awards. She continues to executive produce major international documentaries. She was until recently the chair of the international charity, the Ethical Journalism Network.
She has been a Visiting Professor at Lincoln and De Montfort Universities and sat on the Advisory Board at Sheffield University’s Journalism Department. She was a Visiting Fellow at the Reuters Institute at Oxford University. She has been awarded several honorary doctorates.
She has written one book Trust Me I’m Not a Politician and contributed to several books about journalism and the media. She writes regularly for national newspapers and magazines.
