Covid-19 vaccines

Posted on 19 January 2021

All vaccines given in the UK for Covid-19 are safe in all age groups and all patient groups. These are not live vaccines. If you are offered a vaccine please take it unless you are specifically told that you should not have it. In the latter case, please discuss with your GP or rheumatologist.

We strongly advise all our members to get themselves vaccinated as soon as they receive an offer. We do not advise people to alter the treatment they are on for their PMR or GCA at the time of vaccination, unless they have been told to do so by their doctor or after discussion with their own doctor.

VACCINATION CATEGORIES from Public Health England (PHE) on Priority Groups for some of our members:
The Green Book chapter on the COVID-19 vaccine provides guidance for immunisers on the different priority groups.

Table 2 breaks down the different groups from 1 (most vulnerable) to 9.
Table 3 breaks down who is eligible in group 6 and includes individuals who are immunosuppressed due to treatment or disease, no matter their age:

“Individuals treated with or likely to be treated with systemic steroids for more than a month at a dose equivalent to prednisolone at 20mg or more per day for adults.” are included in Group 6.

Please see page 8 for the breakdown of different groups and page 10 for the full table: Greenbook chapter 14a_v6 (publishing.service.gov.uk)
